How YourBook works

You talk, the app remembers, and a book takes shape. Here's the whole journey, the four tabs, and what the Home screen is telling you.

Reflects YourBook 1.5 · Updated 11 September 2026

Your book is written from what you tell us. There are no forms to fill in and no blank page to face. An interviewer holds a conversation with you, and everything you say, plus any letters, photos, documents or recordings you add, is woven into a private record of your life: the people, places, moments and reflections that make up your story. When enough has been gathered, the app plans a chapter outline from that record, writes the chapters, and you refine them into a printed book.

The journey, end to end

Interview → Add material → Plan chapters → Write chapters → Export or print

The interview never really ends. You can come back to it at any point, and new answers or uploads keep enriching the book even after chapters are written. A chapter that receives new material is flagged for you to regenerate rather than changing on its own.

The four tabs

The whole app lives in four tabs, shown as a bottom bar on your phone and a side rail on the web. Your profile avatar opens the Account page.

  • Home is your dashboard: progress, the journey to the printed book, and quick actions.
  • Story is the interview conversation and the questions that drive it.
  • Book is the chapter outline and the finished chapters.
  • Material is everything you've added: recordings, photos, documents and PDFs.

What the Home tab shows you

Home greets you by time of day and shows where you are on the road to a printed book.

  • Continue your story is the big card at the top, with a suggested next topic and a Pick up the conversation button that takes you into the Story tab. Beside it, a progress panel shows questions answered and words gathered. Tap the target line to open Target settings and change your word-count or page-count goal.
  • Your journey to the printed book is a four-step strip: Interview → Add material → Generate text → Print book, each with a live status line such as "12 items so far" or "ready when you are". It shows progress. It isn't a set of buttons.
  • Quick actions open the upload sheet (Add material) and the recording sheet (Record audio).
  • A small celebration appears when your book crosses a milestone.

While you're on the free trial, a banner at the top offers the one-time purchase. See Trial, purchase and access.

How progress is measured

Your word count comes from the written chapters. Page count is estimated at roughly 300 words per page. The default target is 60,000 words, about 200 pages. You can change it from the target line on the Home card or in Book Settings under Writing Goals.

More than one book

Tap the Your books menu in the app bar (the swap icon) to switch between your active books or to Start a new book. The app remembers which book you last had open, and every tab shows that book's content.

What the app is actually keeping. You never see a database. You see people, places, moments and reflections on the "Your story so far" page. Every detail in it carries its source: the app knows which recording, letter or interview answer it came from. That's why deleting a source only removes facts that nothing else supports, and why a sentence in a finished chapter can show you where it came from.

Works offline. Recordings are saved on your device first and uploaded automatically when a connection returns. You can record in the garden, on a plane, or at grandma's kitchen table without worrying about signal.
